St John Passion discography

Recordings of the St John Passion are shown as a list of selected recordings of the St John Passion, BWV 245, of Johann Sebastian Bach, grouped for "modern instruments" and "period instruments", a movement started by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, among others. Both groups now aim at historically informed performances. Some recordings employ a boys choir as Bach had it in the Thomanerchor. Others respect the knowledge of the small ensembles that Bach conducted by having the soloists form the "choir", one singer per part. The order of the soloists is usually given as: Evangelist, Jesus, soprano, alto, tenor (if a second tenor), bass. The selection is taken from the 155 recordings, listed on the website bach-cantatas as of 2010, the number assigned there given as a reference.
